Google AI Mode Crosses Into Travel Transactions, Threatening OTA Middlemen

Google AI Mode now books hotels and tracks flight prices, shifting from search to transaction and squeezing Expedia, Booking.com, and loyalty programs.

2. Google AI Mode Crosses Into Travel Transactions, Threatening OTA Middlemen

Google AI Mode in Search added three transactional travel features on August 27, 2026. First, flight price tracking from Google Flights is now embedded directly in AI Mode conversations, pulling real-time prices from more than 300 partner airlines and travel sites across 180 countries. Second, users can view redemption costs in points or miles for flights and hotels, launching with Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Choice Hotels International, Hilton, and Wyndham, with Accor, Hyatt, Lufthansa Group, and others coming within weeks. Third, hotel booking now completes inside AI Mode via Google Pay, with Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, IHG, and Hilton as launch partners in the U.S.

This is a meaningful boundary shift. Google has historically sent travel intent to online travel agencies and airline sites, collecting ad revenue along the way. Booking inside AI Mode compresses that funnel. Expedia and Booking.com now appear as checkout options inside a Google product rather than as destinations users navigate to independently. That changes who controls the customer relationship at the moment of purchase. The loyalty integration deepens the threat: by surfacing American Airlines miles or Hilton points rates without requiring users to visit those apps, Google inserts itself between travelers and the reward programs airlines and hotel chains use to build retention.

The pattern here fits a broader Google strategy of converting AI Mode from an answer layer into an action layer. Travel is a high-intent, high-margin category that validates the model before it extends to other transactional verticals. Watch whether the hotel booking completion rate forces Expedia and Booking.com to renegotiate distribution terms with Google, and whether airlines that are absent from the loyalty launch accelerate their own direct-booking AI tools in response.
