Olix's $312M Series C Bets That Optical Silicon Can Break Nvidia's Grip on Inference
Arm and Reed Hastings backing Olix at a $3.3B valuation signals serious capital shifting toward decode-optimized, non-GPU inference hardware.
3. Olix's $312M Series C Bets That Optical Silicon Can Break Nvidia's Grip on Inference
London-based Olix Computing Ltd. raised a $312 million Series C on August 3, 2026, pushing its valuation to $3.3 billion, roughly triple its February 2026 figure. The round drew Arm Holdings and Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings alongside other backers. Olix is building the DX-1, a chip optimized specifically for the decode stage of LLM inference, and plans to ship it inside a data center appliance called the X-1. The DX-1 holds model weights and KV caches in on-chip SRAM rather than off-chip HBM memory, and the X-1 links its processors together using a "slow and wide" optical interconnect based on NRZ encoding instead of the more error-prone PAM4.
The strategic pressure this creates is specific and pointed. Nvidia's Groq 3 LPX already targets decode workloads with large on-chip SRAM pools, so Olix is not entering empty space. What Olix adds is the optical interconnect layer, which removes digital signal processors from the data path, cuts error-correction overhead, and lets operators scale X-1 racks into clusters capable of running models at 10,000-plus tokens per second on 100-billion-parameter models. Arm's participation matters beyond the check: it signals potential architectural alignment that could ease software bring-up, a historically brutal bottleneck for inference chip challengers. For hyperscalers and inference-as-a-service providers, Olix represents a credible second source argument they can use to pressure GPU pricing.
The tripling of valuation in roughly six months reflects a broader pattern: capital is no longer treating GPU alternatives as science projects. Dedicated inference silicon, whether photonic, SRAM-heavy, or both, is attracting institutional conviction. The next signal to watch is customer disclosure. Olix has published performance claims but has not named production deployments. A named hyperscaler or frontier lab contract would confirm whether the DX-1 is a shipping product or still a well-funded roadmap.
